Little River Casino Resort Sets Sights on Expansion in Manistee
02 October 2026
Manistee is seeing a surge of activity in its casino market, as the Little River Casino Resort embarks on an ambitious 2024 renovation of its gaming floor while its tribal owners pursue a broader vision for the town's future. The resort's owner, the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, is pairing substantial investments in gaming with a $91 million mixed-use project downtown and an expanded entertainment scene.
"Even as the industry in the region continues to grow, tribal gaming remains a major draw locally," said a spokesperson for the tribe. "This latest round of upgrades is all about enhancing the experience for guests and supporting our resort's standing in the market."
The gaming floor, the resort's centerpiece, is already 75% complete, according to recent reports. Renovation plans feature refreshed decor, upgraded lighting, a premium sound system, and an expanded variety of slot machines. A new sportsbook and grill, the River Rock, opened in 2020. This string of investments follows previous expansions in 2007 and 2015.
Beyond the Casino Floor
While the casino may be the biggest attraction, the tribe is also active in the town's overall tourism and economic picture. The band's development arm, Little River Holdings, is leading a major undertaking downtown called the Gateway project. According to Manistee News, the $91 million development would include a 210-space parking deck, a variety of residential units, a heritage venue, a condo-hotel, a restaurant, a rooftop bar, and conference space.
Gateway represents an expansion of the tribe's presence in the area. Little River Holdings recently acquired North Channel Brewing Company in Manistee, aimed at cultivating further entertainment options around the Gateway initiative.

Regional Context
The undeveloped land controversy near Fruitport Township provides a relevant context. A proposed casino for that location remains stalled as a US Army Corps of Engineers review continues, years after it was first proposed in 2009.
Northwest of Manistee, the nearby Sleeping Bear area attracts tourists with its Lake Michigan waterfront. A spokesperson for the Harrison Village Association, a nearby seasonal community, noted that casinos have emerged as visitor attractions, complementing the area's natural assets.
The tribe's leadership says its investment reflects a durable, long-term commitment to Manistee. But with increasing development in the area, Michigan's gaming regulations, and shifting visitor interests, local observers are watching how the casino market will evolve amid regional competition.
