Types of Horse Racing Bets

Horse racing sportsbooks, you can bet in a few types of bets. From singles to multiples, following is the list of some of the most utilized types of bets.

Singles

By far the most widely utilized type of bet. One event straight win bet.

Double

Single bet on two events but on opposite results. Both of the selections have to win to result.

Treble

A three-choice bet on different events. All three of them must win so that they can be paid out.

Accumulator

An accumulator is four or more bets in a single bet. All of the bets have to win to get a payout.

Trixie

Three-bet choice and four bets – three doubles and a treble. A return of at least two successful selections is ensured. An example of a £2.50 Trixie will be £10. A £2.50 each-way Trixie will be £20.

Patent

Three sevens are bet – three singles, three doubles, and one treble. Equates to a Trixie and three singles. A £2.50 Patent, for example, will be £17.50.

Yankee

A four-selection bet and 11 bets – six doubles, four trebles, and one fourfold accumulator. Two selections must win at least to ensure a return. A Yankee for £2, for example, will be £22.

Lucky 15

A favourite with punters, four choices and 15 bets (naturally enough) – four singles, six doubles, four trebles, and one fourfold accumulator. Really a Yankee with the only difference being that there are four singles, and one choice can win to make sure that there will be a return. A £2 Lucky 15, for example, is £30.

Canadian

Also referred to as a "Super Yankee," the Canadian bet is made up of five outcomes that include 26 bets — ten doubles, ten trebles, five fourfolds, and a single fivefold accumulator.

Lucky 31

A five-option bet and 31 bets — five singles, ten doubles, ten trebles, five fourfolds, and a single fivefold accumulator. A single selection must win to provide a return. A £1 Lucky 31, for instance, will cost £31.

Super Yankee

A "Super Yankee," or Canadian, is a five-option bet with 26 bets — ten doubles, ten trebles, five fourfolds, and a single fivefold accumulator.

Heinz

A Heinz is six selections with 57 bets: 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, six fivefolds, and one sixfold accumulator. Nicknamed due to the fact that it has "Heinz's marketing slogan '57 varieties' in mind," this specialty bet contains all combinations of six selections in a single bet.

Alphabet

It is a six result bet with 26 bets: two patents (14 bets), a Yankee (11 bets), and a sixfold accumulator.

Single Bets About

Single Bets About is an Any To Come bet with two events with two options, then constructed as two bets from two singles. Any winnings from one single (up to the original stake) are re-invested to create the next single on the other option.

Double Bets About

Double Bets About is an Any To Come bet on two choices in unrelated events offered as two wagers consisting of two singles. Any quantity staked on one single, up to twice the initial stake, is used to fund the other single on the second event.

Flag

Flag bet consists of: six doubles, four trebles, one fourfold, and six SSA Up-And-Down pairs.

Super Flag

Super Flag includes: ten doubles, ten trebles, five fourfolds, one fivefold, and ten singles up and down on pairs.

Super Heinz Flag

Super Heinz Flag has: 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 fourfolds, 21 fivefolds, seven sixfolds, one sevenfold, and 21 singles up and down on pairs.

Goliath Flag

Goliath Flag has: 28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 fourfolds, 56 fivefolds, 28 sixfolds, eight sevenfolds, one eightfold, and 28 singles up and down on pairs.

Union Jack

Union Jack consists of eight triple flags out of nine options. Combinations are formed by arranging chosen flags in a 3×3 pattern, offering three horizontal triple flags, three vertical triple flags, and two diagonal triple flags. 

Forecast

Straight forecast is a precise prediction of horses that will win first and second in the race, respectively.

Each Way

Two portions comprise an Each Way bet, half the stake on the win option and half the stake on the place option. It costs twice as much as a normal win bet and will pay some winnings if the option places or wins.

For example, you can bet a £5 each-way (£10) on a 8-1 horse and the bookmaker will give 1/4 odds on three places. Pay-out if the horse placed is £15; pay-out if the horse won is £60 (£45 win and £15 place), both pay-outs are refunded plus the original stake.

Reverse Forecast

A reverse forecast is a correct prediction of the first two horses but in reverse.

Match Betting

Match bets are a technique used by punters to take advantage of bookmakers' free bets and promotions.

Placepot

Placepot is another of the favourite racing betting choice of the punters. Choose a runner in each of the first six races on one particular race course on any day, and you receive a fraction of the pool if your runner is in the money. Miss just once and the bet is worthless!

Jackpot

One of the toughest to conquer. Get the first six winners at a track for one day for your share of the pool. Miss one week your stake is nothing!
